What is PEACE Mindanao?

PEACE Mindanao aims to contribute to peaceful and cohesive communities in Marawi and Cotabato cities, Mindanao, through building a culture of peace, tolerance and increased social inclusion. Reflecting the impact of conflict on children as well as the key roles which children and young people play in the achievement of a peaceful society, PEACE focuses on the involvement of children and young people. Formal education and informal community structures will be developed to strengthen their capacity and confidence as peace ambassadors in their communities.

The programme takes a whole of society approach to strengthen the capacity of government entities and civil society organisations to support peace processes. PEACE Mindanao will initially work with key stakeholders (traditional law makers, faith leaders, civil society organisations, etc.) to support their capacity to facility inter community peace dialogues, and to respond to a crisis should conflict reoccur.

Empowering Children as Peacebuilders

Children and other young people have unique perspectives on conflict, violence and peace. It is their perspectives that bring in unique policy and programming ideas that align with the way children and young people operate. Their participation is important in identifying local solutions and influences that can be pulled together to achieve desired peace and social change. They also have distinctive. Keeping ‘the best interests of the child’ as the top priority, those working with children need to promote safe and meaningful participation of children in peacebuilding and to avoid unwise or inappropriate programming with children in conflict or violent contexts. Preventing risk in this manner, the "Empowering Children as Agents of Peace" model aims to support children and other young people in conflict-vulnerable areas to become empowered peace actors in their own communities, leading to transformation of individuals, relationships, systems and structures and enhancing the community’s resilience to conflict-related crises.

Humanitarian-Development-Peacebuilding Nexus (HDPN) approach

Working flexibly across this triple nexus unleashes the potential for deeper, transformational change, even in the most challenging contexts, for vulnerable children and families. World Vision aims to work both "in" fragility (protecting people's lives and rights, ensuring the survival of the most affected and most vulnerable children) and "on" fragility (addressing the root causes of fragility so that progress towards peace and stability becomes possible and contributes to communities' recovery and resilience after crises).
